Making Money Online With Affiliate Marketing

Are you making a living online with Affiliate marketing yet? Or at least using affiliate marketing to bring in some extra money? Maybe pay for an upgrade in vacations, or letting your affiliate marketing efforts make those new car payments each month?

Here’s an example - yesterday we put a new e-book with Private Label Rights online at http://www.PLRforSale.com. Ten or twelve of our affiliates jumped on it right away, putting their affiliate marketing process to work to get the message out before most of our affiliates had even really thought about it.

The immediate results? Three of the 12 made enough for a normal car payment in the first 24 hours. All of the 10 or 12 affiliates made some money, those with the bigger lists or more adept at Web 2.0 techniques just made that much more. In affiliate marketing, as in all else in life, the more you put in the more you get back - and the quicker you are the better your affiliate marketing comission checks can be.

And that’s the point I want to make today - to make money online with affiliate marketing, always be busy. When you see a great new offer like the time-limited bundle with the e-book with Private Label Rights and 20 private label rights articles that’s at PLRForSale.com right now, get on it - send it to your list, submit articles with your affiliate link, etc. When things are a bit slower, be building your affiliate marketing opt-in lists so that you have more people to send each offer out to.

It’s time for YOU, too, to join the thousands of affiliate marketers online using affiliate marketing to have the money, freedom and toys they want in life!

To Your Success with Affiliate marketing…

FAP797: Financial Aid For Parents of Young Children

FAP797: Financial Aid For Parents of Young Children

Disclosure: I am not a certified financial planner or a CPA. Please consult a qualified professional before making any major financial changes.

The single most important thing you can do is to start saving sooner rather than later. A qualified CPA or CFA will be able to advise you better (read: they have certifications, I don’t) about the specific balance of retirement and saving for your child, but commit to saving first and foremost. Every dollar you can save is a dollar neither you nor your child will have to borrow.

What savings vehicle should you choose? Most financial planners agree that in terms of least tax liability and least impact on financial aid eligibility, a 529 savings plan is a great idea. Here’s where things can get tricky. There are two kinds of 529 plans.

Type 1 is called a prepaid tuition plan. Pay tuition now to the state of your choice, and as long as your child goes to a school in that state, you’re paying tuition at today’s rates for tomorrow’s education.

Type 2 is called a savings plan, but really, it’s an investment plan, similar to how mutual funds and retirement plans like 401ks work. For this show, we’re going to focus on this second type of plan. You invest money into these plans, where it sits and earns interest for however long, before you withdraw the money. What makes a 529 savings plan different than, say, a regular mutual fund, is that you are not taxed on interest at any time as long as you use the money solely for qualified educational expenses - meaning tuition.

If for some reason your child chooses not to go to college, you can withdraw the money with a 10% penalty on interest earned, which is not a bad deal, all things considered. Where this can really shine is if you have more than one child - you can designate the other child as a beneficiary and have no penalties.

When’s the best time to start saving? Right now. Today. Saving for college is all about leveraging the time value of money - the longer you can save, the more interest you’ll earn. That said, even saving a year before college in a 529 isn’t a bad idea, because again, every dollar you save is a dollar that you and your child doesn’t need to borrow. Here’s an idea of how the savings can rack up. If you start to save $10 a week when a child is born, after 18 years at 8%, you’ll have close to $21,000. If your child is 8 years old and you can put aside $25 a week, you’ll have saved nearly $20,000 in just 10 years. If you’ve only got 5 years until school, if you can squeeze $50 a week out of your budget, you’ll still have nearly $16,000 saved.

How do you choose a plan? Shop around. Each state has 529 investment plans, and you don’t have to be a resident of that state to enroll in that state’s plans. Make sure you take a look at your state’s plan first, though - 33 states offer state tax benefits for investing in state plans.

Here’s a key phrase for you to remember: no load. There are a number of brokerages and advising firms that charge what’s called a front end load - and that can shave 5% or more off your investment as a commission to the brokerage for effectively no work, since 529 plans are managed by the states that administer them. It’s about as close to a scam as you can get without actually legally being a scam. Another version of no-load is direct-sold.

Here’s a second secret: be very careful about fees. Look for plans that have fees under 1% - there are a lot of them out there, whereas other plans can have fees as high as 2.5% annually, which again is close to being a scam.

Another important point: 529 plans are, for the most part, not insured in any way by the FDIC or NCUA, which means that theoretically, if the market were to crash hard, you could lose it all. This is true of all investments except savings accounts up to $100,000 per account and US Treasury bonds. It’s worth thinking about. Statistically, things tend to grow over time, but that’s no guarantee that your plan won’t lose money at some point.

As with all forms of investing, diversification might not be a bad idea. Take a look at various savings and investment opportunities. Putting some money aside in FDIC insured CDs or US treasury bonds, as well as investing in non-529 investment options, may make sense. You’ll definitely want to consult an independent financial advisor for more information - and be sure the advisor does NOT earn any fees or money from recommending any financial services products. A good advisor will disclose any conflicts of interest, or better yet, will be paid entirely for services rendered by you.

Finally, there’s always the issue of having money of any kind to put into a plan in the first place, whether it’s for college, retirement, or other financial needs. Take a sharp look at entrepreneurial opportunities like affiliate programs online, such as Commission Junction and other programs. If you can create a small, home-based side business that can bring in $50 a month or $100 a month extra, you can devote that to savings exclusively and do pretty well.

Even better, start the search for scholarships for your child as early as possible. Encourage them to pursue activities, hobbies, sports, and other things they genuinely enjoy, and look for scholarships and contests relating to those activities early on. We’ve profiled a number of scholarships on the podcast with a minimum entry age of 13, and scholarships earned can be deposited into 529 plans to earn additional interest on top of the savings you put aside.

If all of this sounds confusing, don’t worry too much about it - remember that many community banks and credit unions offer no-fee, no-load financial planners that can help you more accurately plan your finances and save for the future. The fundamental lesson I want you to take away from this episode is:

Every dollar you can save is a dollar neither you nor your child will have to borrow.

Taking Time to Find Your Voice

When I am in the mood for a laugh, I look back at my music career and listen to my old songs. I can hear the very obvious changes in my voice, but many people cannot. Here are links to three songs I have written at three different points in my career. Can you hear the difference?

Thank You For Dancing - 2001 [LINK]

Alone in A Corridor - 2005 [LINK]

On and On - 2008 [LINK]

Naturally, I feel that the last song is my strongest. 7 years of vocal progression have given my voice a more soulful delivery. Singing a song like On and On would have been impossible in 2001. How does this relate to what I am doing now in blogging?

Often times, people will jump right in to blogging before clearly identifying their voice. I know I did. The first mistake I made was not knowing exactly what I wanted to talk about. Initially, I started writing a column based blog. Then, like a lot of people, I became obsessed with the notion that I could easily make six figures blogging about how to make money blogging. The latter was extremely boring and tedious. My final progression has been to focus more on my experience, which is songwriting and music business, and how it can relate to blogging in general. This topic seems to be the easiest and most enjoyable for me to write about.

Although the progression only took about 8 months, I have landed at a place in which I feel happy and comfortable blogging on a regular basis. I also feel that what I contribute now is meaningful and worthwhile to someone, although obviously not everyone. I anticipate my blogging voice will continue to develop over time. Just as with singing, maybe in 5 years I will have a more soulful delivery.

If you are struggling with your voice, there are things you can try to help you figure out what is needed. Something I always did while writing a song was to ask myself what the song was about as a whole. Not specific lyrics or direct subject matter, but the broad overview of the song. When you figure out the broad subject matter, it becomes much easier to identify how to deliver the direct subject matter. Suppose you decide you want to create a make money blog. You can take the overall subject matter and strip it down to a way you feel comfortable delivering it. For example, maybe you want to focus specifically on affiliate programs. Once you streamline the overwhelming part of starting a blog, it is much easier to identify where you fit in and how to use your voice.

When I was struggling with a song, I would often shelve it for a fresh idea. If your current blog isn’t working the way you want it, try something new. If the original idea was good enough, you will find your way back to it with a fresh approach and attitude. I just finished a song that I wrote music to way back in 2004! Sometimes, an idea just needs to simmer for a while.

Writing a blog should be fun, but don’t be discouraged if at times it feels like work. This is part of the process of identifying what makes you tick as a blogger. When a blog feels like 100 percent work and 0 percent fun, that may be the time for you to look for a different part of your voice.

What challenges have you come across when establishing your voice?

hit, git and split

In Rolling Stone’s currentold piece on the best music blogs of 20084, three out of the four winners which do MP3s are using Yahoo! Media Player. That’s a pretty good score, and it shows that the media player has found a place in the world. I feel great. It’s like seeing your kid graduate from college and get a decent job. To see that the software has grown up, or at least reached its decadent 20s, means the completion of a long project.

Early work on the software now known as Yahoo! Media Player began in fall of 2004 as version 2.0 of Webjay. My vision was to move outwards from Webjay’s centralized form, and rather than have a site for authoring playlists have any old web authoring tool on any old site be able to create playlists using HTML. The difference would be ease of use — rather than go to Webjay, it would come to you. When Webjay got acquired by Yahoo! this unreleased software was picked up and began a new life as a project codenamed “goose.” During my first year at Yahoo!, while Webjay proper was going down, the new version was coming up, and right around the same time that we officially shuttered webjay.org we also bootstrapped a good development team for goose.

The first goose release went live on July 31, 2007 in the most modest way I could arrange — as a player for 30 second samples in an easter egg page within Yahoo!’s massively trafficked music site. The power of an AJAX-based player was evident in a subtle way, though, in that it supported Yahoo’s subscription service in off-the-shelf Internet Explorer on Windows. The subscription service wasn’t an impressive product, but the underlying code was truly hair-raising and couldn’t have been done with a traditional Flash MP3 player.

The next major iteration was in January of 2008, when we released a version of the player which could handle third-party content and run in third-party pages. It was a dramatically more open piece of work and we got great buzz right out of the gate, with articles all over blogdom and a warm reception from users. From there we picked up the pace on the release schedule quite a lot, turning the crank on a new rev a month later. Along with user interface changes based on feedback, we introduced the ability to open XSPF playlists that weren’t available to straight AJAX or Flash apps, as well as an integrated screen scraper that could turn almost any page on the web into a playlist just by linking to it. A month later we did the last rev of the first version of the player. This had many fit and finish improvements, auto-attribution for MP3 hosts being deep-linked, a buy button with an affiliate program for web publishers, and a “Find in page” button to help you associate a track with the place in the page that it came from. The first major version was complete. We went into quiet mode to work on version 2.0, which will be out in alpha form very soon and will have significant improvements.

And with that, my part in this is done. There is an excellent team to run the show, the product has good support on the business side of Yahoo!, there is a healthy user and developer community, and the software has good market share. It’s time for me to let go and move on, and so today is my last official day at Yahoo!

I don’t know exactly what I’ll do next, though I do have general ideas about areas to explore. What I do know is that tomorrow morning I’ll sit down to start work on whatever comes next.

Thanks for everything, y’all. See you on the flip side.
